I don’t know what has happened lately, but I’ve been hyper aware of people’s excuse-making habits. I attest it to the whole “new car” syndrome. Like when you buy a new car and suddenly EVERYONE is driving that same car. No, no they’re not. You are just more aware. Lately I’ve been more aware of my own personal excuses in life.
I’m working on getting better at reducing my excuses. Excuses are ugly. Basically, it is a way for someone to get around the truth of telling you how they feel. When people make excuses, they are covering something else up. Think about it. If someone is giving you a lame excuse for why they can’t go to dinner, it kind of stings. I would rather the person be honest with me and let me know the real reasons they can’t go.
I had this come up the other weekend. A friend of mine really wanted to hang out and had awesome intentions of having a little “girls time.” As, the introvert that I am, though, I really had to just be honest and tell her the truth. I needed some “me” time. I needed to be in peace and quiet and not have to entertain anyone. Would it have been easier to tell her that I was busy? Yup! But I have much more integrity as a human being when I rid myself of lame excuses.
So, as an homage to the lame excuses I’ve been hearing lately in the fitness world, I’m sharing with you the top 5 excuses that just don’t work in fitness.
I DON’T HAVE TIME
Right. Like you were gifted 10 less hours in your day than the rest of the world. Riddle me this…How is it that OTHER people who are MUCH BUSIER than both you and I have time? It’s not that you don’t have time. It’s that you don’t make it a non-negotiable part of your schedule. AND I FEEL YOU! I’ve been there, too! I used to drop everything once someone called and said “Hey let’s meet up.” But, now-a-days, I don’t drop my workout for bar hangs. I just don’t. It is more important to me than the cheap beer we were going to drink.
But I know that life is busy. I get it. So how do you MAKE time? Wake up earlier, stay up later, or remove other things from your life that are getting in the way. How much television do you watch? Maybe that’s an area where you could find some time? How much scrolling do you typically do on social media? Heck! Stop reading this article and go do something if it means so much to you. Bottom line is there IS time. The proper answer for you (if you find yourself making this excuse often) would be to say “I am not prioritizing my workouts into my schedule.” That’s the truth.
I DON’T LIKE WORKING OUT
You haven’t found something that works for you. Working out doesn’t have to be torture and quite frankly, if you’re torturing yourself, I feel sad for you. Working out should be a celebration of the body we have and the life we live, not because you ate something bad for lunch or because you want to look a certain way. You should workout because you want to add years to your life, not for superficial reasons.
If you hate the treadmill, stop running on the treadmill. If you hate cross-fit, don’t go to cross-fit. If lifting weights makes you want to puke, do something else. Seriously, there is a soul mate workout out there for everyone. You simply haven’t found it.
Another reason you also might not like working out is because it is not the same as eating pizza and watching Netflix. Not at all. But you’ve got to make a habit out of it and trust me, you will learn to love it.
MY FAMILY/FRIENDS RUIN IT FOR ME
So they have a gun to your head and are forcing you to eat what they are eating? Come ON! That’s ridiculous!!! You have a choice in EVERYTHING. And if it is important enough to you, you will find a way. Have an open discussion with your family and friends. INVOLVE THEM. Make workout dates with your friends. Try new, healthy recipes with your family. If your kids don’t like eating healthy, consider who taught them how to eat the way they did. I know it isn’t easy to break habits, but you have to be the role model for your family. Start slow. Sneak veggies into unknown places. I had a client feed her family vegetarian meatballs with their pasta and THEY HAD NO IDEA!!! She even posted the pic on social media of them LOVING THE FOOD! 🙂 That’s one badass mom, if you ask me.
As for friends, my friends know that if you’re going to be around me and hang out, then we’d better do something active. Went hiking last week with a friend in town and had a “walk around the lake” date with another friend a couple weekends ago. My friends know that being fit together is much more fun that just sitting around.
And if they don’t get on board?! Leave em in the dust. Again, if it’s important enough, you will find a way to make it work.
I’M TOO TIRED
Give it 5 minutes. Start the workout, go for 5 minutes, and if you’re still exhuasted…GO TO BED.
Working out BOOSTS your energy with the flow of “feel good” hormones called endorphins. You also get circulation in your body, which helps to energize you as well. If you are too exhausted by the end of the day to workout, then start planning your workouts for the morning. I know it’s hard to get out of bed in the A.M., but it will make the rest of your day MUCH more productive. AND you don’t have to worry that you are too tired. BOOM! EXC– USE, GONE!
