Just to Hear Your Voice- A Story About the Simple Things

“I love you,” he said as he hurriedly went to hang up the phone. I don’t even know if he noticed I didn’t say “I love you” back. I just hung up.

The short, interrupted conversation was not what I envisioned for the day. I mean, I wait all day to hear his voice. All day long for a mere 10 minutes. And today’s 10 minutes sucked. Yep…I said it. They sucked.

I hung up, said something unkind to the phone as it sat on the counter, and attempted to go about my business. I needed to get dinner going so I could do my pilates workout, but this nagging feeling of yuckiness was looming over me. We don’t hang up hurriedly. We don’t skip out on saying “I love you.” But, today’s 10 minutes sucked!

I immediately messaged him back and let him know I wasn’t feeling so great about that conversation. And you know what? He didn’t argue. He didn’t say he was sorry. He simply just let me know that even though it wasn’t ideal, he just wanted to hear my voice really quick and that he promised we’d talk again later. He let me know he loved me and that was that.

Sigh. Sometimes I spend so much time looking forward to our conversations that I forget the point of it all. I’m so thankful for a man who can quickly remind me that it’s not always about these “Fairy Tale” conversations or these award winning date nights. Nope. Sometimes, and especially where we are in our lives, hearing each others’ voice is enough. Longing for all the things that make a relationship “feel” good, I have to step back and remember that not every day will contain all of those things. Sometimes it’s the sound of his voice. Sometimes it’s his laugh. Sometimes it’s simply sitting together in stillness. Not every moment is an adventure. But every moment is a gift. I’ve got to remember to enjoy every teeny tiny component of Mr. Charles Frost.

Do you do this with those you love? Do you sit back and fall in love with each small aspect of them? I’m often really bad at that. I will definitely admit it! I want the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the ocean! I want it all!!! It can make me forget what I really want. And at the root of it, all I really want is my other half. I just want the comfort of his voice. The sound of his laugh. Knowing that he’s far in distance, but not at all in spirit.

Hug your loved ones a little tighter. Spend a second longer day dreaming about them. Tell them that you love them and that you’re glad to hear their voice. Let them know they are beautiful or handsome. Enjoy the way they smell. Listen to their laughter fill your ears. Follow the way their smile spreads across their face. Imagine your future and tell them you’ll see them in your dreams. Pray for them. Love them. And take time to remember the smallest aspects that can make you fall in love all over again.
