Somebody pinch me!!! The wait is finally over! 🙂 After 6 weeks of distance, I finally get to see my fiance again!!! I’m seriously so excited! The last 6 weeks has been a LONG haul and I’m finally ready to wrap my arms around Charles once again.
And I know I’m not alone (the vacation part, not the hugging Charles part!). It’s summer and that means travel plans are among us! As a health and fitness coach, I get asked by my clients how they can stay healthy while they travel. Since I’m in the midst of packing for my own vacation, I thought, what better time to show all of you how I do what I do! There really are two components to living healthy- what you eat and what you do. So let’s look at these areas in terms of my vacation habits!
EATING HEALTHY ON THE GO
The hardest thing to combat on vacation, in my opinion, is healthy eating. Vacation is a time to enjoy the finer things in life and with that comes fine foods and drinks! I get it. I’m totally indulging while I’m away…work hard, play hard, right?! But, I also know that indulging means I want to ENJOY what I’m eating. I’m not indulging just to indulge. Planning out where I’m eating and what their menu offers is a great way to stay in check. I also know what my body craves and what it doesn’t. It craves unique, delicious cuisine- not McDonald’s in the airport. I would rather save my calories for something that I can savor than for something that is going to make me feel sick. And honestly, fresh, local foods always taste better than chains. So I recommend finding out where the locals eat and head there!
When I travel, it is important to keep healthy options with me throughout the day so I can snack properly. I’m a grazer, so waiting all day for a big meal is just not my style. I pack my shaker bottle and shakeology packets for quick meals (typically breakfast) and I can use my bottle to refill with water to stay hydrated throughout the rest of the day. Some other snacks that I love packing include Lara Bars, fruit, vegetables and hummus, cheese sticks, and trail mix. These are super easy grab-and-go snacks. The trick is to never be empty handed!!!
FITNESS ON THE GO
My dear friend, Camilla, has an amazing website called “Find Your Fit,” so I’m stealing her slogan for a second because it really is brilliant! 🙂 When you travel, seek out fitness. Does the hotel you’re staying at provide a gym or fitness center? If so, make plans to go there in the morning before you can choose otherwise. Who are you traveling with? Have them hold you accountable and vice-versa in regards to scheduled workouts. If your hotel doesn’t have a gym, I bet it has WiFi! If you have a WiFi connection and a mobile device you can stream live workouts from Beachbody On Demand. I don’t pack my DVD’s when I travel- THAT’S JUST SILLY! Instead, I take my laptop, cell phone, or tablet and stream a workout of choice (think thousands to pick from) right in my very own hotel room. BOOM! No excuses.
I also suggest choosing walking over other forms of transportation or find “fit activities” in the area of travel. Maybe there is a bicycle tour of the city, or you can swim some laps in the pool in between tanning sessions. Whatever it may be, commit to at least one fit activity a day!
PACK LIKE YOU’RE GOING TO WORKOUT
This is a no brain-er. Seriously. Pack your sneakers. Pack your sports bra. Pack your cute tanks. And just suck it up and do it. Working out makes us feel better. Vacation makes us feel better. Think of how much more “feel betters” you will have if you combine those two forces! 😉 Study after study after study prove to us the value of get-aways AND the value of working out in terms of our overall happiness. Maybe you fell off the wagon. Getting away from your stressful life at home is the perfect time to jump start a healthier habit. You have more time, you feel free-er. When I wasn’t working out regularly, I always enjoyed getting away from home as a turning point back towards my health and fitness goals.
